Swervedriver's Raise arrived in 1991 and quickly set the Oxford band apart within the first wave of shoegaze, blending haze and volume with a tougher, road-hungry streak. Founded by Adam Franklin and Jimmy Hartridge, Swervedriver leaned into psychedelia and guitar noise without losing momentum, and that push-pull is a big part of why Raise still stands out. Songs like “Rave Down,” “Sandblasted” and “Son of Mustang Ford” capture the album’s mix of rush, melody and distortion especially well.
As a debut, it established the band’s distinctive identity: less dream-pop drift, more forward motion and scorched riffing. The album built an enduring cult following, and this 35th anniversary edition makes a strong case for hearing it as more than a period piece. The newly mastered album returns on the first disc, while the second gathers eight bonus tracks of B-sides and rarities selected by the band themselves, giving a fuller picture of Swervedriver’s early world without turning the release into a completist exercise.
For longtime fans, that extra material adds context to a record that helped define Swervedriver’s appeal from the start; for newer listeners, it’s an accessible way into one of the more muscular and melodic records to emerge from early-90s British alternative rock.
